The konak by day

The konak

A konakin the Çarşı

Süleyman Bey Konağı stands in Karaali, in the Çarşı — Safranbolu's old winter quarter. A stone-founded, timber-framed, whitewashed Safranbolu house, now a guesthouse licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

01A Safranbolu house

Every room
a home of its own

Safranbolu houses are mostly generous three-storey buildings with six to eight rooms. Each room was designed to meet all the needs of a family: built-in cupboards called yüklük, shelves, a hearth and low divans.

Stone below, timber and mudbrick above, traditional clay tiles on the roof. Projecting bays give the façades their rhythm, and the tall, narrow windows carry wooden lattices.
